The first workshop for the production of wires was put into operation. The newly-built workshop for flexible rubber cables starts. A workshop for power cables with low-voltage PVC insulation was launched. A new workshop for the production of telephone cables was built and put into operation by a project of the Italian company De Angeli. Power cables with insulation of chemically crosslinked polyethylene have been produced in accordance with the purchased license from Sumitomo Electric, comprising: two lines for cross-linking in a nitrogen environment; laboratory equipment for quality control of the materials and the final product; know how for cable production.

Elkabel is the first Bulgarian company certified under ISO 9002 and since 1998 the company has been re-certified by Bureau Veritas Quality International in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001-2000. Elkabel is transformed into a joint-stock company with a majority owner. The management is carried out at two levels - the Supervisory Board and the Management Board.

Modernization of the power production has been carried out, with new extrusion lines for insulation and wrapping, screening machine, fast moving twisting machines and semi-automatic roller winding machine. An integrated management system is introduced according to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. A copper wire production plant is put into operation. Completes the integration of the new ERP SAP system. A new high-voltage test station with a test capability of up to 200 kV and a new laboratory for testing cables in a fire condition were put into operation. A new ERP system has been successfully implemented in the shopping centers in Bourgas, Plovdiv and Sofia.
